How to Verify an NRI Groom Before Marriage: A Checklist

An open passport with pages full of colourful visa and entry stamps

To verify an NRI groom, check him through people you trust who live near him abroad, ask to see his passport, visa or residence papers and proof of his job, get his marital status in writing, and meet him and his family in person before fixing the date. Then register the marriage in India and keep copies of everything. A genuine groom expects these questions and answers them calmly.

Most NRI marriages are happy ones. But a wife who moves abroad is far from her family, often depends on her husband's visa, and may not know the local language or law. That is why the Ministry of External Affairs and the National Commission for Women both ask families to check carefully before the wedding, when it is easy, rather than after.

Step 1: Ask people who know him

Start with people, not paperwork. Relatives and friends in the same city or country can tell you things no document shows.

  • Find someone local. Ask relatives, old classmates and colleagues if anyone lives in or near his city abroad. Ask them to meet him, visit his home or at least confirm where he lives and works.
  • Talk to his community there. Temples, gurdwaras, churches, mosques and Indian associations abroad often know the families who attend. A quiet word with an office-bearer can be revealing.
  • Check his references in India too. Neighbours, his school or college and family friends in his hometown can confirm his family background and whether he was married before.
  • Be wary of a single source. If everything you know about him comes from one marriage broker or one relative of his, keep checking.

Step 2: Ask for these documents

Asking for papers is normal, not rude. Explain that you would want the same done for your son. Ask to see the originals (on a video call if needed) and keep copies.

What to confirm Papers to ask for
Identity Indian passport, or foreign passport and OCI card
Right to live abroad Visa, work permit or residence card (for example a US green card, a UK eVisa or a Canadian PR card)
Job and income Offer letter or employment letter, last few months' payslips, recent tax returns
Address abroad Lease or property papers, a utility bill or a bank statement
Marital status A sworn affidavit that he is unmarried, or the divorce decree or death certificate if he was married before
Clean record A police clearance certificate (see below)

Check the visa, not just the job title

His visa decides your future as much as his job does. Ask plainly:

  • Is he a citizen, a permanent resident or on a work visa? A citizen or permanent resident can usually sponsor a spouse. A temporary work visa may allow a dependant visa, but with conditions.
  • Can his wife work there? In the United States, for example, the wife of an H-1B worker comes on an H-4 visa, which allows work only in some cases. Ask what the rules would be for you.
  • How long will the spouse visa take? Some routes take months, others years. Agree what happens in the meantime.

In the UK, a person can create a share code from their online immigration status at GOV.UK. Entering the code and his date of birth on GOV.UK shows his real status, so it is a simple way for him to prove it. For other countries, the embassy or the immigration department's website explains which documents prove residence.

Confirm the job independently

Don't rely only on a letter he gives you. Look up the company's main phone number on its own website (not the number on the letter) and ask whether he works there. A professional profile such as LinkedIn that matches his story over several years is a good sign; one created last month is not.

Check his record

  • India: An Indian living abroad can apply for a police clearance certificate (PCC) through the Indian embassy or consulate, or through Passport Seva in India.
  • United States: The National Sex Offender Public Website is a free government search by name and state.
  • United Kingdom: Anyone can request a basic DBS check of their own record from GOV.UK and share the certificate.
  • Other countries: Most countries issue a police certificate to their own residents. Ask him to get one.

A man with nothing to hide can arrange these in a few weeks.

Step 3: Meet him, his family and his life

Papers can be forged; daily life is harder to fake.

  • Meet in person, more than once. Spend real time together before the engagement, not only at a formal "seeing" with everyone present.
  • Visit his family home in India and meet his parents, siblings and relatives.
  • Video call him at home and at work, at different times. Ask to see where he lives. Notice whether he is ever with friends or colleagues.
  • Talk about life after marriage. Where will you live, who manages money, will you work, when will you visit India? Our guide to finding the perfect match lists the conversations couples most need to have.

If possible, a parent or brother can visit him abroad before the wedding. It is the single best check.

Warning signs

Slow down, or step back, if you notice any of these:

  • Rush. He wants the wedding within days or weeks, "because leave is short".
  • Secrecy. He wants a quiet wedding, only a temple ceremony with no registration, or a wedding abroad without your family.
  • Missing papers. He avoids showing his visa, payslips or divorce decree, or keeps promising them "later".
  • Money or dowry. Any demand for dowry, cash or gifts. Dowry is a crime in India under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
  • Control of your papers. He or his family insists on handling your passport and visa application.
  • Stories that don't match. His job, salary or city change between conversations, or what his relatives say doesn't match what he says.

Protect the bride after the wedding

Even when every check is clear, take these simple steps:

  • Register the marriage in India, under the Hindu Marriage Act, the Special Marriage Act or the law that applies to you. A marriage certificate is the proof embassies, visa offices and courts ask for. In 2024 the Law Commission recommended making registration compulsory for marriages between NRIs and Indian citizens because of fraud and desertion cases. If you are in Kerala, see our guide to marriage registration in Kerala.
  • Keep copies of his passport, visa, address and employer details, your marriage certificate and wedding photos, with your parents in India and in your own email.
  • Keep your own passport and some money of your own, and know how to reach the nearest Indian embassy or consulate.
  • Save these contacts: the NRI Cell of the National Commission for Women, which handles complaints from women married to NRIs, including desertion and dowry demands, and the Indian embassy, which can help women in distress abroad.

Finding NRI grooms safely

Matrimonial sites make it easy to meet NRI families, and just as easy to meet people who lie. On FreeMarriage.com every new profile is reviewed before others can see it, and members can verify their identity to earn a Verified badge. Phone numbers and emails are kept out of profiles, so you can talk on the site until you are ready to share more. You can browse Hindu grooms in the United States, Hindu grooms in the United Kingdom or Muslim grooms in the UAE, and it is free to create a profile. A badge or a review is a starting point, not a substitute for the checks above.

If you are a parent searching for your daughter, our guide to finding a groom for your daughter covers the whole search, from the first conversation at home to meeting families.
